WASHINGTON, D.C. – 6.6 million workers filed unemployment claims during the week ending April 4, adding to the almost 10 million workers who filed for unemployment in the previous two weeks.

The almost 17 million Americans who are now out of work are not only struggling to file for unemployment, they are also not yet seeing relief from the $2 trillion stimulus bill signed into law by President Trump nearly two weeks ago.

“If the Trump administration can find a way to help special interests it can find a way to save our small businesses that are shedding jobs at record numbers. Congress has appropriated $350 billion to support small business loans, but no one knows how many loans have been processed, how much money has gotten out the door or how many jobs have been lost as a result. While Trump and his team dithers, millions are going without a paycheck this week. It doesn’t have to be this way — Americans deserve better,” said Accountable.US President Kyle Herrig.

President Trump likes to talk about what he’s done to support vulnerable people as the country struggles through this crisis. But he fails to put his money where his mouth is, and actually execute:

  • Housing and Urban Develop Secretary Ben Carson sits on the White House COVID-19 response task force… but his agency’s guidance on the pandemic doesn’t even mention rent.
  • The administration committed to helping people through the Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program… but the system is broken, and people can’t process their loans.
  • Airlines applied last week for funds to protect employees from layoffs… but so far there has been no progress reported on shielding these employees’ jobs.
  • Relief checks promised to Americans in the last stimulus bill are nowhere to be seen and reportedly may take months to arrive… and even worse, millions of people may never get them at all, because of how the Trump administration decided to distribute checks.
