Washington, D.C. – Today, the Accountable Senate War Room released the following statement on Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) spreading misinformation about the outages in Texas that have left millions without power or heat in freezing temperatures, and using it to attack Interior Secretary nominee Deb Haaland. 

“Senator Daines is spreading misinformation to score cheap political points to further his smear campaign against Rep. Haaland,” said Mairead Lynn, spokesperson for Accountable Senate War Room. “It’s not surprising to see Daines continue to shill for his Big Oil donors, but to use the pain and suffering of millions of Texans to spread falsehoods is a new low, even for him.” 

Daines falsely insinuated that wind energy is to blame for the blackouts; in reality, the vast majority of outages are a result of frozen instruments at natural gas and coal facilities. Daines has previously attacked Haaland and said he would oppose her nomination, claiming she would be bad for oil, gas and coal. Daines has taken at least $1,179,260 from Big Oil and Gas over his career.
