Washington, D.C. — Today, government watchdog Accountable.US announced that Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich has been identified as an enemy of progress due to his opposition to key issues like addressing climate change and making health care accessible for all. The group launched a new campaign, “Enemies of Progress,” outlining the potential threats that Brnovich and other Republican attorneys general around the country pose to advancements that support all Americans. Accountable.US also released its first report highlighting how Brnovich and others are using their positions as top law enforcement officials to defend their campaign donors, not their constituents.

“Instead of fighting for their best interests, Attorney General Brnovich is spending Arizonans’ taxpayer dollars on frivolous lawsuits against the Biden administration on behalf of his special interest donors,” said Kyle Herrig, president of Accountable.US. “Brnovich used his position as Arizona’s top law enforcement official to not only try to overturn a democratically held election, but convince millions of Americans – without providing any evidence – that the 2020 election was somehow fraudulent. His continued perpetuation of “The Big Lie” has sowed doubt into the minds of millions of Americans, causing irreversible damage to our election integrity and our democracy.”

This new campaign exposes some of the worst offenders, including Brnovich, who have proven to be working towards one goal in their capacity as their state’s top law enforcement official: to slow down or prevent progress on some of the country’s toughest issues. Brnovich is joined by another 12 “Enemies of Progress” including the attorneys general from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, and West Virginia. In the coming days, the effort will be amplified with paid ads in key states, including on social media and traditional media websites.

“Poll after poll shows the public supports the Biden agenda, and any obstructionist who would abuse their power to protect profits of greedy special interests is an enemy of progress,” added Herrig.

Here’s more on how Attorney General Brnovich was selected as a top “Enemy of Progress”:

  • Sowed Doubt In Arizona Election Results: Brnovich sought to force Maricopa County to turn over elections materials in an effort that was ultimately rejected by the courts. A prior audit of election results found zero evidence of fraud.

  • Defended Racially Discriminatory Voting Laws: Brnovich appealed the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a lower court’s ruling that decided that two Arizona voting laws were racially discriminatory. The lower court found that the laws, which banned third party ballot returns, had “discriminatory intent” and the state’s out-of-precinct ballot rejection law impacted minority populations disproportionately. Brnovich claimed the laws’ challengers were “playing the race card.”

  • Fought Against Immigrants’ Rights: Brnovich joined in a case before the U.S. Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. SCOTUS sided against Brnovich and the Trump administration and upheld the program. Brnovich sued the Biden administration just weeks after its inauguration challenging the new policy pausing deportations.

  • Fought To Resume Capital Punishment: Since the 2015 suspension on federal executions, Brnovich has repeatedly advocated to resume the practice, which inordinately targets Black Arizonans.
