As Electoral College certifies President-elect Biden’s win, Accountable.US has four essential questions for Republican senators

After years of standing up for corporate interests, Republicans are now laying the groundwork to deny Biden a government that will put working families first

Washington, DC – As the Electoral College certifies the results of the presidential election today, the question remains whether Senate Republicans will continue to use President Trump’s efforts to subvert the will of the people as an excuse to deny and delay President-elect Biden’s ability to put in place a  functioning government to clean up Trump’s messes, get the pandemic under control, and make progress for workers, families, and communities. These senators know the longer they delay President-elect Biden’s Cabinet nominees, the longer their special interest allies can continue gaming the system.

It shouldn’t have taken this long, but now that the Electoral College has certified the results, Senate Republicans should be asked these four questions and be held accountable if they continue their obstruction and delay:

  1. Now that the Electoral College has certified the election, when will you start meeting with President-elect Biden’s Cabinet nominees
  2. If President Trump refuses to concede, will you meet with nominees before the inauguration?
  3. Are President Trump’s frivolous lawsuits more important than President-elect Biden’s ability to combat the COVID pandemic on day one?
  4. Do you believe Biden should be denied national security and COVID response officials on day one because Trump continues to contest the election?

“For more than a month, Republicans hid behind Trump’s frivolous lawsuits to overturn the election as an excuse to delay and obstruct President-elect Biden’s transition and incoming administration,” said Mairead Lynn, spokesperson for the Accountable.US Senate War Room. “President Trump’s efforts are undemocratic, unpatriotic, and dangerous—and now Senate Republicans need to respect the will of the people and allow President-elect Biden to put in place a government that can clean up Trump’s messes and start getting our country back on track.”

Watchdog group Accountable.US recently launched the Accountable Senate War Room to fight back against those lawmakers who seek to overturn the will of the people by standing in the way of the smooth transition of power and the swift approval of nominees to ensure that the government can function and deliver results for the American people.
