Washington, D.C. — Today, government watchdog Accountable.US announced that Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr has been identified as an enemy of progress due to his opposition to key issues like addressing climate change and making health care accessible for all. The group launched a new campaign, “Enemies of Progress,” outlining the potential threats that Carr and other Republican attorneys general around the country pose to advancements that support all Americans. Accountable.US also released its first report highlighting how Carr and others are using their positions as top law enforcement officials to defend their campaign donors, not their constituents.

“Instead of fighting for their best interests, Attorney General Carr is spending Georgians’ taxpayer dollars on frivolous lawsuits against the Biden administration on behalf of his special interest donors,” said Kyle Herrig, president of Accountable.US. “Carr headed one of the key organizations behind the Trump rally just before the deadly Capitol riot, and slinking away from the group four months later does not somehow excuse him from the incredible damage caused to our democracy that day.”

This new campaign exposes some of the worst offenders, including Carr, who have proven to be working towards one goal in their capacity as their state’s top law enforcement official: to slow down or prevent progress on some of the country’s toughest issues. Carr is joined by another 12 “Enemies of Progress” including the attorneys general from Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, and West Virginia. In the coming days, the effort will be amplified with paid ads in key states, including on social media and traditional media websites.

“Poll after poll shows the public supports the Biden agenda, and any obstructionist who would abuse their power to protect profits of greedy special interests is an enemy of progress,” added Herrig.

Here’s more on how Attorney General Carr was selected as a top “Enemy of Progress”:

  • Put Lives At Risk: Carr sued the City of Atlanta to block it from enforcing a mask mandate during the COVID-19 pandemic. Even as Georgia set a single-day record for COVID cases, Carr called the mandate “unenforceable and void” as the state’s infection rate and deaths continued to mount.

  • Undermined Voting Rights: As many states were expanding voting options so people could safely vote in the midst of the pandemic, Carr was undermining voting rights at every turn. In 2020, Carr’s office opposed efforts to allow absentee ballots to be counted even if they were postmarked by Election Day, fought to purge the voter rolls, defended a practice called a “poll tax” for mail-in voters, fought to keep third-party candidates from ballot access, and defended state policies that led to hours-long waiting lines to vote.

  • Steeped In Right-Wing Associations: Despite being Georgia AG since 2016, Carr is still a member of the Koch-funded Federalist Society and once served as general counsel for Koch-backed Georgia Public Policy Foundation. Additionally, Carr was a leader in the Republican Attorneys General Association, a group whose political arm helped organize and promote the events that led to the deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
