Washington, D.C. — Today, government watchdog Accountable.US announced that Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry has been identified as an enemy of progress due to his opposition to key issues like addressing climate change and making health care accessible for all. The group launched a new campaign, “Enemies of Progress,” outlining the potential threats that Landry and other Republican attorneys general around the country pose to advancements that support all Americans. Accountable.US also released its first report highlighting how Landry and others are using their positions as top law enforcement officials to defend their campaign donors, not their constituents.

“Instead of fighting for their best interests, Attorney General Landry is spending Louisianans’ taxpayer dollars on frivolous lawsuits against the Biden administration on behalf of his special interest donors,” said Kyle Herrig, president of Accountable.US. “Louisiana taxpayers deserve answers from Landry about why he cares more about his wealthy Big Oil friends than vulnerable families facing economic and public health crises.”

This new campaign exposes some of the worst offenders who have proven to be working towards one goal in their capacity as their state’s top law enforcement official: to slow down or prevent progress on some of the country’s toughest issues. Landry is joined by another 12 “Enemies of Progress” including the attorneys general from Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, and West Virginia. In the coming days, the effort will be amplified with paid ads in key states, including on social media and traditional media websites.

“Poll after poll shows the public supports the Biden agenda, and any obstructionist who would abuse their power to protect profits of greedy special interests is an enemy of progress,” added Herrig.

Here’s more on how Attorney General Landry was selected as a top “Enemy of Progress”:

  • Argued for Discrimination Against the LGBTQ Community in the Workplace: Landry challenged and overturned a state executive order protecting the LGBTQ community from discrimination by state contractors. Landry also signed onto an amicus brief advocating for LGBTQ discrimination in a case before the Supreme Court, which ultimately ruled in favor of workplace protections for LGBTQ under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.

  • Big Oil’s Best Friend: Not only was the oil and gas industry one of the top donors to Landry’s political ambitions, giving him nearly $1 million over the course of his career, but as congressman and attorney general he’s been an industry ally, defending their interests in lawsuits in Louisiana.

  • Tried To Profit Off Immigrant Labor At The Expense Of American Workers: Landry reportedly owned a firm that partnered with a well-known fraudster who exploited cheap immigrant labor so that he did not have to hire American workers. Landry’s firm hired foreign workers and provided them visas obtained with falsified documents.

  • Shielded A Top Aide Who Faced Sexual Assault Allegations: Landry conducted a “sham investigation” of a top aide, Pat Magee, who was accused of at least six sexual assault allegations. Not only did Landry hire an outside law firm that had conducted a prior sexual harassment investigation that didn’t lead to any consequences for the perpetrator, but the Landry aide also ended up with only a slap on the wrist. The whistleblower behind allegations of Magee’s sexual harassment ultimately resigned from the AG’s office due to retaliation.
