Washington, DC – After weeks of refusing to even acknowledge President-elect Biden’s win, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other Republicans finally accepted reality following the Electoral College certification. The Accountable Senate War Room is now calling on McConnell to put his money where his mouth is and commit to moving quickly to confirm Biden’s nominees so his administration is ready on day one to start cleaning up Trump’s messes, getting the pandemic under control, and rebuilding our economy in a way that puts workers and families first. 

Republican senators’ recent posturing and threats to obstruct the incoming administration’s nominees stand in stark contrast to their positions in 2016, when they rushed to confirm President Trump’s unqualified and at times corrupt nominees because they knew Trump’s administration would prioritize special interests over working families.  

“It’s great that Mitch McConnell seems to be coming around to the reality that President-elect Biden won this election, but that doesn’t mean much if he and his Republican conference don’t immediately get to work confirming Biden’s nominees and allowing him to put in place a government that can deliver for the American people,” said Mairead Lynn, spokesperson for Accountable.US Senate War Room. “With a pandemic and economic crisis still raging and people across the country expecting their new government to get to work quickly to clean up Trump’s messes and get our economy back on track, there is not going to be any tolerance for Republicans who claim to accept that Biden won but refuse to allow him to govern.”

Senate Majority Whip John Thune said that Joe Biden is president-elect once he crosses 270 electoral votes and says efforts to challenge the results in Congress is “not going anywhere.” He said “it’s time for everybody to move on” after today.

Watchdog group Accountable.US recently launched the Accountable Senate War Room to fight back against those lawmakers who seek to overturn the will of the people by standing in the way of the smooth transition of power and the swift approval of nominees to ensure that the government can function and deliver results for the American people.
