Washington, D.C. — Government watchdog Accountable.US released a new analysis finding Fortune 500 companies and corporate trade associations donated over $826,000 in March alone to the 147 members of Congress that voted against certifying the 2020 election in the aftermath of the January 6th insurrection. Contributions from corporate interests to the group that has been called the ‘Sedition Caucus’ following the failed coup attempt now stand at over $12.4 million. Additionally, Accountable.US identified 19 companies and trade groups that gave to election objectors last month for the first time since the Capitol riot, including United Airlines – for a total of $79,000.  

Accountable.US found Home Depot’s PAC was the top giver for a second month in a row, totaling $95,000 to election objectors in March. Last month, the company responded to Accountable.US’ findings that they led the pack with a statement effectively declaring their willingness to support any lawmaker they deem pro-business no matter what extreme views they hold. Accountable.US also found that the first quarter of 2022 marked the second largest period in terms of corporate giving to the ‘Sedition Caucus’ since January 6, 2021.

Two things that cannot be true at the same time: a corporation that supports democracy and one that also cuts big checks to lawmakers who incited a violent and historic attempt to undermine it – and continue to undermine democracy by keeping the Big Lie alive. Corporations that have failed to align their political spending with their stated values supporting democracy should stop misleading the public about what they value far more – amassing political influence. It’s short-sighted for any corporation to marginalize concerns from its customers and shareholders when it comes to democracy, because a healthy democracy will always be what’s best for business.”

Last August, Accountable.US launched its searchable tracker that allows the public to search Fortune 500 corporations and big corporate trade associations that have contributed to those in Congress that voted against certifying the 2020 election since January of 2021 — including corporations that made pledges to halt or pause donations to the lawmakers that perpetuated the Big Lie. In January, Accountable.US released a major report, “In Bad Company,” highlighting the hypocrisy of numerous big-name corporations that have not followed through on their words of support for democracy.
