In response to Accountable.US’s campaign pressuring companies to drop the U.S. Chamber of Commerce over their anti-democratic positions, the Chamber echoes “Big Lie” Talking Points

Yesterday, government watchdog Accountable.US launched its “Drop The Chamber” campaign. The campaign asks major corporations including Microsoft, Target, and Salesforce to back up their public statements in support of voting rights by severing their relationships with the U.S. Chamber over its well-documented history of funding voter suppression efforts — including its ongoing lobbying blitz against H.R.1, the For the People Act. These companies’ consumers and shareholders deserve clarity about their positions given the wave of voter suppression efforts consuming state legislatures across the country — which would go unchecked if the Chamber is successful in lobbying to derail H.R.1. Either these companies are committed to their publicly declared values on voting rights, or they aren’t.

In response to Accountable.US’s campaign, the U.S. Chamber put out a deeply misleading blog post to distract from the issue at hand. The Chamber talks about “trust in our election system,” which has become right-wing code for the “Big Lie,” and fails to address its clear and long-standing record of backing efforts to disenfranchise voters, particularly in communities of color. The trade association would rather make desperate red herring arguments designed to distract from the fact that it has funded voter suppression schemes for years.

And, it’s clear why. The Chamber has a problem. Many of the companies the Chamber represents have made commitments to stand up for democracy while the trade association they pay dues to continues to undermine the cornerstones of our democracy. These companies have a choice about whether to pay lip service to voting rights and democracy or put their money where their mouth is. The Chamber must be terrified of this choice. They may be on the wrong side of history, but many of the companies they represent are working to be on the right side.

In 2010, The US Chamber Of Commerce Funded The Conservative-Led Redistricting Majority Project Known As REDMAP, Which Targeted State Legislative Races In 16 States And Allowed Republican-Controlled Districting Condemned By Voting Rights Advocates As Having “Cracked, Stacked, Packed, And Bleached Black Voters.”
