Trump Administration Says Checks May Take 20 Weeks To Reach Some Americans

WASHINGTON, D.C. According to a memo obtained by CNN, some Americans may not receive their $1200 coronavirus stimulus checks for five months due to capacity issues within the Trump Administration’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service. For FY 2020, the Trump Administration had proposed “streamlining staffing” for the Bureau and cutting 58 employees.

In response to these revelations, Accountable.US released the following statement from its president, Kyle Herrig:

“President Trump has a history of failing to pay his debts on time, but forcing Americans in the midst of a public health crisis and recession to wait up to five months for government assistance is a new low. The administration must take immediate action to ensure Americans in need get the resources owed to them.”

KEY EXCERPT FROM CNN:

Americans likely won’t begin to see direct payments from the coronavirus stimulus bill until at least April 13 and it could take 20 weeks for all the checks to be mailed, Trump administration officials told lawmakers, according to a House Democratic memo obtained by CNN.

The timeline means tens of millions of Americans will have to wait to get badly needed assistance, despite repeated suggestions from Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin that the money would go out as soon as April 6. He said this past Sunday after passage of the $2.2 trillion stimulus bill that payments would not go out until mid-April.
