Trump to Praise Nurses After Failing to Deliver Crucial Protective Equipment or Disavow Hospital Protesters

WASHINGTON, D.C. Today, President Trump will sign a proclamation praising nurses on the frontlines of the fight against COVID-19. But that lip service is a far cry from how the administration has actually responded to nurses’ concerns: downplaying their need for PPE and endorsing protests that may risk their lives.

Trump and his allies have repeatedly downplayed nurses’ calls for more personal protective equipment (PPE) and test kits. New whistleblower complaints show that instead of getting nurses the supplies they need from trusted, well-vetted manufacturers, the administration was prioritizing “VIPs” with connections to Trump — and failing to deliver. Moreover, Trump repeatedly urged and showed support for protesters across the country that put nurses in danger by breaking social distancing protocols and demanding that the country reopen before adequate testing and safety measures have been established.

“If Trump really wanted to honor nurses, he would get them the PPE they need and call off his armed protesters that fail to take appropriate safety measures and put nurses’ lives at risk,” said Kyle Herrig, president of Accountable.US. “It’s shameful — though not surprising — that Trump is opting for another photo op instead of providing meaningful support to the nation’s frontline health workers.”
