Washington, D.C. — Today, government watchdog Accountable.US announced that Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has been identified as an enemy of progress due to his opposition to key issues like addressing climate change and making health care accessible for all. The group launched a new campaign, “Enemies of Progress,” outlining the potential threats that Paxton and other Republican attorneys general around the country pose to advancements that support all Americans. Accountable.US also released its first report highlighting how Paxton and others are using their positions as top law enforcement officials to defend their campaign donors, not their constituents.

“Instead of fighting for their best interests, Attorney General Paxton is spending Texans’ taxpayer dollars on frivolous lawsuits against the Biden administration on behalf of his special interest donors,” said Kyle Herrig, president of Accountable.US. “Paxton should consider focusing on his own legal troubles and get out of the Biden administration’s way rather than spending taxpayer-funded resources obstructing much-needed relief for millions of Texas families.”

This new campaign exposes some of the worst offenders who have proven to be working towards one goal in their capacity as their state’s top law enforcement official: to slow down or prevent progress on some of the country’s toughest issues. Paxton is joined by another 12 “Enemies of Progress” including the attorneys general from Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, South Carolina, South Dakota, and West Virginia. In the coming days, the effort will be amplified with paid ads in key states, including on social media and traditional media websites.

“Poll after poll shows the public supports the Biden agenda, and any obstructionist who would abuse their power to protect profits of greedy special interests is an enemy of progress,” added Herrig.

Here’s more on how Attorney General Paxton was selected as a top “Enemy of Progress”:

  • Under Investigation By The FBI After Previous Scrutiny From SEC: Paxton has been mired in legal issues with the FBI, SEC, Texas State Securities Board, and the State of Texas since becoming attorney general— under investigation for bribery, felony securities fraud, and using his powers as AG to protect a donor from federal investigation who gave Paxton tens of thousands of dollars. Some of Paxton’s accusers were then fired from his office and in turn sued the attorney general under whistleblower protections.

  • Led The Charge To Undermine The 2020 Election: Paxton led the case in 2020 seeking to overturn the results of the presidential election in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, and Wisconsin. He even spoke at the “Stop the Steal” rally on January 6 that led to the deadly insurrection and later tried to claim the left was behind the dangerous attempt to overthrow the democratically-elected government.

  • Repeatedly Helmed Anti-Immigration Efforts: Paxton led the charge all the way to the Supreme Court to overthrow a program that would have allowed parents of citizens or of lawful permanent residents to apply for a program protecting them from deportation and instead providing work permits. Additionally, Paxton has sued 4 the Biden Administration over immigration during the pandemic, the rescission of the “Remain in Mexico” Policy, the rescission of the ‘public charge’ rule, among other anti-immigration efforts.
