Rokita has a history of suppressing the voices of Hoosier voters as a member of Congress and the former secretary of state, and made waves before even taking office this January when he supported the overturning of a democratically-held election

Accountable.US: “Since becoming Indiana’s attorney general, Rokita has only doubled down on his unpopular, far-right policies, and is now being offered the spotlight to spread more lies”

Washington, D.C. Today, government watchdog Accountable.US released the following statement ahead of this evening’s event hosted by the Adams County Republican Party — the Republican Lincoln Day Gala Event — featuring Trump loyalist and voter suppression enthusiast Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita as the keynote speaker in Decatur, Indiana:

“For an event purporting to honor law enforcement and the military, it’s odd that Todd Rokita who failed to quickly condemn the violence at the U.S. Capitol that left two police officers dead was selected to give the keynote speech. Rokita supported overturning a democratically-held election, and has worked to suppress the voices of Hoosier voters throughout his political career, pioneering some of the country’s strictest voter ID laws. Rokita continues to double down on his unpopular, far-right policies, and is now being offered the spotlight to spread more lies. This is just another example of how far once-mainstream conservative groups have gone to appease Trump and his Big Lie,” said Kyle Herrig, president of Accountable.US.

Todd Rokita was one of three attorneys general that refused to sign on to a letter condemning the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol in January. Not only did he initially refuse to denounce the violence, but he compared the insurrection that left five people dead to the predominantly peaceful Black Lives Matter protests for racial equality last summer. Before he was even sworn in to office, Rokita supported Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s ludicrous lawsuit that attempted to overturn the results of the 2020 general election that claimed widespread voter fraud without providing a shred of evidence. Rokita was also behind the implementation of the nation’s first strict voter ID law that suppressed the voices of tens of thousands of Indiana voters’ voices and inspired voter suppression efforts in states across the country.
