Washington, D.C. — Minutes ago, the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack voted unanimously to hold Steve Bannon, one-time chief strategist for former President Donald Trump, in criminal contempt of Congress after his refusal to comply with the panel’s subpoena. In response, government watchdog Accountable.US released the following statement commending the committee for demanding answers and seeking justice for the American people:  

“Americans deserve to finally hear the full story about the violent insurrection on January 6th. For that to happen we must get the truth from all those involved in the deadly attack on our nation’s Capitol — including those closest to Donald Trump, whom the former president has directed to stay silent,” said Kyle Herrig, president of Accountable.US. “Trump’s allies have grown far too comfortable evading accountability. The committee is right to keep fighting for answers so the nation can heal and move forward.”  

The vote follows Trump’s announcement yesterday that he is suing the committee and the National Archives to keep the records of his White House’s activities on January 6th sealed from view of lawmakers and the public.  

According to reports earlier today, Senate Republicans are allegedly blocking the confirmation of President Biden’s nominee to lead the U.S. attorney’s office for the District of Columbia — the office charged with prosecuting more than 600 individuals involved in the attack on the Capitol. Trump has previously offered sympathy to those charged with participating in the Capitol riot that left at least five people dead. 

Bannon is the first Trump ally to face the committee’s vote, but recent reports indicate that other former top Trump administration officials and aides including Mark Meadows, Dan Scavino, and Kash Patel have also been instructed by the former president to dodge the committee’s subpoenas.
