Washington, D.C. — Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry continued his crusade against the LGBTQ community last week at a fundraiser that benefited anti-LGBTQ organization, Louisiana Family Forum, NoLa reported. In response, Accountable.US released the following statement:

“Companies eager to market their purported support for the LGBTQ community hope no one will notice when they turn around and donate to some of the most extreme anti-LGBTQ politicians across the country,” said Kyle Herrig, president of Accountable.US. “Companies like Pfizer must ask themselves: do the discriminatory and hateful policies proposed by Landry and others against the LGBTQ community align with their values? If not, they must disavow the discriminatory policies these officials push, or risk being complicit in their hateful agenda.”

Government watchdog Accountable.US released a report this summer outlining the longstanding efforts of conservative attorneys generals across the country, including Landry, to diminish the rights of LGBTQ people, and higlighted the companies that claim to support the LGBTQ community while simultaneously donating to these anti-LGBTQ officials. Pfizer is among Landry’s largest donors, despite his repeated attacks on the LGBTQ community. Yet, Pfizer tweeted to celebrate Pride 2021, used a logo with pride colors, and touted their support of federal LGBTQ protections.

This is just the latest in Landry’s long history of discriminating against the LGBTQ community:

  • Landry successfully challenged and overturned a Louisiana state executive order that protected the rights of LGBTQ people and state employees from discrimination [Reuters, 12/14/16].

  • Landry signed a SCOTUS amicus brief challenging workplace protections under the Civil Rights Act for transgender people — but his efforts were unsuccesful [Bayou Brief, 6/15/20].

  • Landry attempted to goad a state university into dropping its LGBTQ studies minor at the school, claiming it undermined “higher education’s primary mission” and “wasted taxpayer money” [KPEL965, 7/12/12].

  • Landry heavily criticized an Obama-administration proposal meant to ensure states allowed students to use the bathroom or locker rooms of their gender identity, claiming it would threaten the “mental well-being and privacy rights” of 99% of Louisiana’s children  [KPEL 96.5, 05/18/16].

  • Landry attacked the Obama administration’s transgender directive as a misplaced priority, stating, “President Kennedy was talking about putting a man on the moon [and today] we’re talking about putting boys in girls’ bathrooms.” [CNN via Cajun Conservatism via YouTube, 05/26/16 (1:51)]

  • In November 2017, Landry appeared on a radio show hosted by Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, a Southern Poverty Law Center-designated hate group with an anti-LGBTQ ideology. [Family Research Council, 11/30/17; SPLC, accessed 09/14/21].

  • Landry joined a 14-state coalition defending a photographer who refused service to same-sex couples under the guise of “religious liberty” [Attorney General Ken Paxton — Press Release, 6/9/21].

  • In June 2021, Landry called on the Louisiana legislature to override Governor Edwards’ veto of an anti-transgender athlete bill. [The Office of Attorney General Jeff Landry, 6/23/21]
