Watchdog: Trump Keynoting CPAC Is Ultimate Endorsement of Capitol Riot From Mainstream Conservative Movement

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Twice-impeached former President Donald Trump is slated to speak at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) today — as a golden calf-like idol in his image was paraded around the convention halls — despite CPAC’s previous statements distancing itself from the deadly, Trump-incited January 6 Capitol coup attempt. Government watchdog Accountable.US called CPAC’s decision to put Trump on a pedestal proof positive that the insurrection had support from the mainstream conservative movement. 

“When Donald Trump is given a hero’s welcome at CPAC, it will be the largest gathering of sedition supporters since the Capitol riot itself,” said Kyle Herrig, president of Accountable.US. “The deadly assault on our democracy was not a spontaneous event of random right-wing extremists, it was instigated by Trump himself and had buy-in from the mainstream conservative movement. The more evidence that emerges of Trump’s guilt, the more conservative leaders rally behind him. Trump lit the match of insurrection, and CPAC leaders would obviously rather keep stoking the fire for as long as possible.”
