GOP Megadonors and Corporations Financed The Movement That Led To White Nationalists Attempting To Overthrow The U.S. Government

WASHINGTON, D.C. Today, government watchdog Accountable.US is launching “Subsidizing Sedition,” a campaign focused on exposing those involved or who contributed to the deadly and destructive attack on the U.S. Capitol Building on January 6, 2021.

By following the money and social media trail, it becomes clear the heinous attacks were not a spontaneous incident led by random right-wing extremists but rather a coordinated effort years in the making by major Republican donors, corporations, and others benefitting from radicalization. Subsidizing Sedition will track the donors to those entities that helped to incite the seditious events – from corporations to wealthy family foundations – and showcase how years of aid from those operating in mainstream Republican circles encouraged and supported dangerous rhetoric and actions that fueled the hateful, anti-Semitic, white nationalist groups who sought to undermine democracy.

“We simply can’t give a free pass to those who fueled and inspired the conspiracies, disinformation, and outright lies that culminated in deadly insurrection on January 6th,” said Kyle Herrig, president of Accountable.US. “These companies, organizations, and individuals provided the financial aid, platforms, and credibility that sowed the seeds of extremism. What we saw at the Capitol Building was not just the work of the right-wing fringe — it was the direct result of years of investments and deliberate choices benefiting those in the mainstream conservative movement.”

In the coming weeks, Accountable.US’s Subsidizing Sedition project will release a series of reports on the corporations, elected officials, political groups, and others closely associated with the movement that led to the attempted insurrection at the U.S. Capitol Building.
